A teenager has avoided jail despite leading police on a 100mph chase and smashing a 32-tonne lorry off the road as he crashed.

Oliver Clark, from Weelsby Street in Grimsby, sped off in his Ford Fiesta after failing to stop for police in Cleethorpes in Lincolnshire.

Dashcam footage shows the 19-year-old swerving dangerously on the A180 road with police just behind him.

Accelerating towards a lorry – and seemingly with space to get by – he suddenly ploughs into the back, leaving his car a crumpled wreck and knocking the truck down an embankment.

The lorry driver escaped with minor injuries – as did the police officer whose car was hit by Clark’s vehicle as it rebounded off the lorry.

The teenager spent four days in a coma after the July 2022 crash and continues to recover from his injuries.

Investigating officer PC Sean Hutchinson said Clark had driven at over 100mph on the Barnetby Top slip road before the crash.

“Due to the dangerous manner of Clark’s driving, it was not possible to immediately bring the pursuit to a safe resolution, as to do so could have risked endangering the lives of the officers engaged in the pursuit,” he said.

Humberside Police revealed that Clark had escaped prison after a judge last week gave him a 12-month sentence, suspended for two years.

Judge John Thackray KC told him he was “extremely fortunate” as it was only “pure chance” that no one was killed.

Clark was also banned from driving for two years and must do an extended test to get his licence back.
