Pop star Rihanna has reportedly dropped a lawsuit against her father, just weeks before they were due to appear in court over claims he used his daughter’s name without her permission to make money.

The Umbrella singer, who is the world’s richest female musician, has apparently reached a settlement out of court with Ronald Fenty in an effort to avoid a public dispute, according to documents seen by Radar Online.

Rihanna filed the lawsuit in 2019, saying: “Although Mr Fenty is Rihanna’s father, he does not have, and never has had, authority to act on Rihanna’s behalf.”

She added that Mr Fenty was booking shows for her despite not being her agent, including a $15m (£10.9m) overseas tour without checking with her.

The Barbadian singer, whose real name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty, claimed she had no knowledge of the shows, and said it caused her reputational damage when it came to talking to promoters and venues.

Rihanna also alleged her father tried to trademark the phrase “Fenty” and use it to open hotels, and she asked the court for an injunction against her father.

He said he was the first to use the name and asked for the lawsuit to be thrown out.

The pair were supposed to be meeting in court later this month, after travel restrictions prevented Rihanna from travelling to the US from the UK for the original hearing date in June.

Rihanna, 33, and her father have had a fractious relationship, with Mr Fenty divorcing her mother when she was just 14.

He has battled alcohol and drug addictions and was sent home from a tour in 2008 due to drunken behaviour on the tour bus, according to reports.

However, the singer apparently looked after her father last year when he caught COVID-19, sending him a ventilator and checking up on him daily.
