'Please kill me now' - jury shown footage of man accused of murdering millionaire leading police on 135mph chase

Video footage of Thomas Schreiber being pursued by armed police at speeds of up to 135mph into central London has been shown to the jury in his murder trial.

Thomas Schreiber, of Gillingham, Dorset, is on trial at Winchester Crown Court accused of the murder of 83-year-old Sir Richard Sutton and the attempted murder of his mother Anne Schreiber, on 7 April.

The 35-year-old has previously admitted the manslaughter of Sir Richard, who was listed as number 435 in the Sunday Times Rich list last year, and pleaded guilty to driving a Range Rover dangerously on the A303, A4 and M3.

The attack happened at Sir Richard’s Moorhill estate near Gillingham, Dorset, which he shared with the Schreiber family following the separation of the defendant’s parents.

Anne Schreiber was paralysed in the attack and remains in hospital seven months later.

On Friday, footage of Schreiber being pursued by armed police at speeds of up to 135mph into central London was shown to the jury.

The pursuit along the A303 and M3 into central London happened after the defendant had fatally stabbed the victim and attacked his mother.

As well as footage from a police helicopter, body-worn video from a pursuing vehicle was shown with an officer shouting at the defendant: “Armed police.”

The footage shows the Range Rover being driven by Schreiber colliding with a police car in what has been described as a “hard stop” in Chiswick, west London.

Body-worn video also shows Schreiber, who had been Tasered, being dragged from the car before officers removed his clothes to locate where he had stabbed himself in the chest.

Schreiber is heard repeatedly calling out: “Please kill me now, please just shoot me,” and adding: “I am asking you to put a bullet in my f****** head.”

An officer replies: “Mate, that’s not going to happen, stop asking.”

During the trial, a video interview from Ms Schreiber at Salisbury Hospital was also shown to the court.

The 66-year-old explained how, on the day of the attack, the defendant had come into the kitchen looking “unusual” and his eyes being “frightening”.

“He was definitely not himself, I would swear on oath that the man who came in my kitchen could have been a total stranger, he looked not out of normal but unusual, because I was shocked when I saw him,” she said.

“He stood with his knife, he certainly didn’t look like he was going to help me peel potatoes, let’s put it that way, it was definitely a threatening posture.”

She went on to describe how she was stabbed multiple times, saying she remembers “looking at the knife in me and being surprised it doesn’t hurt”.

Giving evidence by live video-link from hospital, Ms Schreiber, sitting in a wheelchair, said her son had been “very strongly” affected by the death of his father and had never come to terms with it.

She said the defendant was not happy when she moved in with Sir Richard in 2003, and added: “He found it difficult, Thomas didn’t like my friend and lover Richard Sutton to be part of his life, on the other hand, he didn’t like his father to be there either.”

Schreiber denies murder and attempted murder and the trial continues.
