Man dies and two injured after large-scale rescue operation on Ben Nevis

A man has died and two people were injured after 17 people had to be rescued in a large-scale operation on Ben Nevis.

Police said the 28-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene after the alarm was raised when climbers got into difficulty on the mountain in Scotland on Tuesday.

Two other men, aged 29 and 37, required hospital treatment for minor injuries following the rescue operation.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and a full report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”

Mountain rescuers Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team, who cover Ben Nevis, said they had been “especially busy” over the last five days.

They wrote on Facebook: “Since Saturday we’ve had 12 callouts and recovered 26 casualties. Unfortunately 3 of these shouts resulted in fatalities and we’d like to extend our heart fealt condolence to the friends and family of those involved at this difficult time.

“It would be remiss if we didn’t stress just how important it is to be adequately prepared for winter in the hills.

“Having the ability to competently navigate with map and compass as well as having and being able to use crampons and axe are vital skills to have if you’re venturing into the hills.”
