Two people have been rescued from a mine complex after their boat got stuck in an underground lake.

Volunteers were called out on Saturday afternoon after reports two people were overdue from a trip at the Croesor-Rhosydd mine complex in Eryri (Snowdonia).

More than 20 members of the North Wales Cave Rescue Organisation (NWCRO) responded from across the region to a call from North Wales Police alerting them to the incident.

One of the missing cavers managed to get out and provide further information to rescuers.

A boat had been used for one of the lake crossings and later became jammed, he explained.

The pair were unable to retrieve it so the two decided to retrace their steps.

However, the second person became exhausted and could not climb the final pitch out of the mine complex.

A team of rescuers was dispatched and after assessing the person, assisted them up to the surface.

The rescue operation finished at around 11pm, the NWCRO said.

It carries out underground search and rescue in the region’s caves and disused mines.
