Police in Northern Ireland have arrested a 48-year-old man as they investigate a video allegedly showing an off-duty taxi driver with a gun.

Officers are still looking into dashcam footage which circulated on social media, apparently showing a man at the wheel of a car with a weapon.

The man was arrested on suspicion of several offences, including possession of a firearm or imitation firearm.

He remains in custody and the investigation is continuing, the Police Service in Northern Ireland (PSNI) said.

“Detectives appeal to anyone with any information to contact police on 101 or a report can be submitted online,” the force said in a statement.

The arrest comes after a Belfast taxi firm confirmed it had sacked one of its drivers in connection with the same video.

A man wearing a FonaCab company jacket can be seen in the footage.

He can be seen gesturing to a man in the passenger seat of the vehicle, while a third man sits in the back seat.

FonaCab said in a statement that the taxi driver was not working when the video was recorded and the two men seen in the car were not booked passengers.

“The driver had logged off and was not working for FonaCab at the time of the incident,” it said.

“We will however state that any action which affects the safety of our passengers, staff and drivers is never acceptable and should any infringement occur will be dealt with immediately by FonaCab and referred to the appropriate authorities.”
