Yellow weather warnings have been issued following forecasts that strong winds and heavy rain are to set to lash parts of the UK.

The Met Office issued the alerts, covering northern parts of England including Middlesbrough, Newcastle and Carlisle, as well as Scotland and parts of Northern Ireland, for Wednesday.

Bus, train and ferry services could face disruption, with journeys taking longer in affected areas if roads and bridges are forced to close.

The weather agency said some short-term loss of power is expected, with small chances of damage to buildings and potentially harmful flying debris.

Rain is forecast to spread into northwest Scotland on Tuesday night, with winds strengthening in the north.

Heavy rain and gales will then spread across the North of England on Wednesday morning.

Wind gusts are expected to be between 55mph and 75mph within the areas covered by the weather warnings, with the potential to reach 85mph in parts of the far north of Scotland.

In contrast, southern parts of the UK are set to remain dry and breezy, with temperatures reaching peaks of between 10C and 12C during the day on Wednesday.

On Sunday, a provisional new UK maximum temperature record for January of 19.9C was set in the Scottish Highlands at Achfary.
