Prince William and Prince Harry will attend a small event next week to mark the unveiling of a statue of their mother Princess Diana.

Kensington Palace announced that both brothers will be at the event on Thursday to mark what would have been Diana’s 60th birthday.

Prince Harry, whose daughter Lilibet was born a few weeks ago, will fly over from America for the occasion.

The unveiling will take place within the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace, where Diana used to spend a great deal of time chatting to the gardeners. It was also where Prince Harry and Meghan posed for their engagement photos in 2017.

Also attending will be Diana’s close family, members of the statue committee, sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley, whose portrait of the Queen appears on all UK coins, and garden designer Pip Morrison.

The brothers announced at the beginning of 2017 that they were jointly commissioning a statue ahead of the 20th anniversary of Diana’s death.

The Duke of Cambridge and Duke of Sussex have previously said it felt like the right time to recognise their mother’s positive impact “in the UK and around the world”.

In a joint statement when the project was announced, William and Harry said: “Our mother touched so many lives.

“We hope the statue will help all those who visit Kensington Palace to reflect on her life and her legacy.”

It was at first anticipated that the statue would be unveiled later in 2017. No clear reason has been given for the long delay, although it is thought that the COVID-19 pandemic may have postponed the installation.

The event will be a rare moment where the two princes will be seen together, amid reports that the brothers fell out after Harry and his wife Meghan decided to step away from royal life.

That decision was followed by the couple’s controversial interview with Oprah Winfrey.

The Daily Mirror reported that Harry had landed at London Heathrow earlier on Friday and was expected to isolate at Frogmore Cottage in Windsor for five days.

William and Harry were seen talking to each other as they walked back to Windsor Castle following the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral in April.
