Asda is the cheapest of the large supermarkets to do a full Christmas dinner shop, new analysis has found.
The consumer elves at Which? looked at how much ten popular festive foods cost at five of the biggest UK supermarkets – Asda, Tesco, Waitrose, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons.
They looked at the price of a frozen medium turkey crown, sprouts, potatoes, parsnips, red cabbage, carrots, cranberry sauce, a stock pot, stuffing and a Christmas pudding between 26 and 28 November.
Asda came in cheapest at £30.72, followed by Tesco at £32.07, and Sainsbury’s at £35.57.
Morrison’s was the second most expensive, at £37.21.
But Waitrose topped the list at £43, making it £13 more expensive than Asda.
Ocado was not included because it did not have a comparable turkey crown.
An Asda spokesperson said: “Keeping prices low for customers while delivering great quality products is so important, so we’re really pleased that Asda has been recognised as the best value supermarket for Christmas dinner.
“We’re doing all we can to help families enjoy the festivities this year including increasing the size of our Christmas range to more than 700 products with prices to suit all customer budgets.”
What about Aldi and Lidl?
Because Aldi and Lidl don’t stock quite the same range they weren’t included in the full analysis, however, it did come out cheaper for a smaller range of Christmas favourites.
This smaller stocking of goods didn’t include Christmas pudding, stuffing and cranberry sauce.
Aldi came out cheapest at £22.30 – but was neck and neck with rival Lidl, which came in at just 14p more expensive.
Aldi and Lidl are the cheapest supermarkets for a frozen turkey crown this Christmas, costing £15.49 at both discounters. Asda is the cheapest of the bigger supermarkets at £16.50.
The equivalent turkey at Waitrose is almost £10 more expensive.
Lidl came out cheapest for Christmas pudding, with a small one costing £3.79. Which? could not find an equivalent pudding available at Aldi.
Again, Waitrose topped the pudding list, with their pudding almost twice as pricey at £7.

Is turkey more expensive this year?
Food prices have increased at the greatest rate since records began – spurred on by accelerated inflation in the price of meat, eggs and dairy.
Which? also compared the price of turkey to last year, and found Morrison’s had seen the biggest price increase, rising 36% from £17.50 to £21.99.
While Asda was cheapest overall for a basket-full of Christmas dinner, it saw the second highest increase in price (18%) of a turkey crown.
Sainsbury’s had the smallest percentage price increase on a medium turkey, rising by 9%.

Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, said: “Soaring inflation will be a worry to many households celebrating Christmas this year and our price analysis shows a turkey crown could cost 26% more than last year depending on where you shop.
“The good news is you can still save a packet on your festive lunch and we’ve found Aldi, Lidl and Asda all offer good value for your roast turkey and sprouts.”
