The UK has reported another 31,914 coronavirus cases and 40 deaths, latest daily figures show.

The figures compare to the 28,438 new COVID cases and 26 deaths reported last Monday; and 25,161 cases and 37 deaths the previous Monday.

On Sunday, there were 32,253 new cases recorded and 49 people were reported to have died within 28 days of a positive test.

Latest data also shows that the number of people admitted to hospital with coronavirus has reached an August high.

The number of people admitted on 17 August – the latest figures available – was 948, the highest since 22 July.

Meanwhile, another 40,345 people have had their first dose of a coronavirus vaccine, taking the total number to 47,690,741 (87.7% of the population aged over 16).

The number of people fully vaccinated has risen by 116,352 to 41,810,753 (76.9%).

It comes after the UK agreed to buy 35 million more doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, which are due to be delivered from the second half of next year.

Also on Monday, all 16 and 17-year-olds became eligible to get their first dose of a COVID vaccine, with experts still considering whether the jab should also be offered to all children aged 12 to 15.

Some 95,200 lives have been saved by COVID vaccines, according to the latest data from Public Health England and Cambridge University. They have prevented 82,100 hospital admissions and 23.9 million infections in England alone.
