The UK has recorded another five COVID deaths and 2,047 more cases in the latest daily figures.

It compares with seven deaths and 1,907 cases this time last week, while the latest seven-day rolling average is 11.3 and 2,080.

On Friday, 119,240 first vaccine doses were administered across the UK, and 449,716 second doses were given.

It takes total first doses to 35,188,981 and second doses to 17,214,436.

The government has said it will offer all adults a jab by the end of July, and in England anyone over 40 is now eligible.

Meanwhile, UK deaths within 28 days of a positive test now stand at 127,603.

There were also 1,152 people in hospital with COVID, according to the latest available figures (6 May); 163 of them on ventilators.

It comes as a cabinet minister defended the “cautious start” to reopening holiday travel after criticism from the travel industry.

Environment Secretary George Eustice acknowledged it was a “modest first step”, but told Sky News the list of approved countries would be regularly reviewed.

Portugal, Gibraltar and Israel are among just 12 destinations on the green list from 17 May – when the holiday ban is lifted – but some countries featured are still not accepting tourists.

Spain, France, Italy and Greece will be on the amber list – destinations people are advised not to travel to, and from which they must self-isolate at home for 10 days when they return.

The industry has warned the government approach could hamper the recovery of the travel sector, which has borne the economic brunt of the COVID-19 pandemic.
