The fourth instalment in The Matrix franchise has finally been given its name after Warner Bros screened a trailer at a film convention in Las Vegas.

The upcoming action film, which sees Keanu Reeves reprise the role of Neo, will be called The Matrix: Resurrections – carrying on the franchise’s naming conventions of using words beginning with the letter R.

And while fans at Caesar’s Palace were shown the new trailer for the dystopian film, it has not yet been released online.

Those in the room say the clip shows Neo/Thomas Anderson talking to a therapist (played by Neil Patrick Harris) about some dreams he had “that weren’t just dreams”, suggesting his memory of what The Matrix is, is non-existent.

He then runs into Carrie-Anne Moss’s character, Trinity, his lover in the previous films – but they don’t appear to recognise each other.

Neo later meets a man (played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), who gives him a red pill, just as Morpheus had done in the first film, allowing him to see once more just what The Matrix is.

Footage of Reeves stopping bullets and fighting in a dojo is also seen in the clip, as is the image of his pre-pill self in an incubator – all reminiscent of the original film.

The film’s plot is still largely under wraps, but the cast is packed full of stars, including Jada Pinkett-Smith from the original trilogy, Priyanka Chopra-Jonas and Jonathan Groff.

However, notably absent from the new film will be Hugo Weaving, who starred as the ominous Agent Smith before Neo destroyed him in the last film and Laurence Fishburne, who played Neo’s mentor Morpheus.

The franchise is set in a dystopian future, where people are unknowingly part of a simulated reality called The Matrix, with the real world far less glamorous and largely underground where the “unplugged” battle “the machines” in an effort to survive.

Lana Wachowski, who made the other Matrix films with sister Lilly, returns to direct the film, which is due for release in December.

Warner Bros also treated fans to a number of other sneak peaks at their event at the Las Vegas CinemaCon, including Robert Pattinson’s Batman, which was filmed in the UK, and Sopranos prequel The Many Saints Of Newark.
