The Russian Olympic Committee took gold over the United States after Simon Biles exited the competition due to a “medical issue”.
The Russian gymnasts posted a team score of 169.528, ahead of the US in second place at 166.096.
The gold is the first for the Russians since the Unified Team triumphed in Barcelona in 1992.
It is a sweet victory for Russia’s women, who finished a distant second to the American team at the 2019 World Championships.
The withdrawal of Biles, one of the biggest names in gymnastics and winner of four golds and a bronze in Rio, was confirmed in a statement by the USA Gymnastics team.
“Simone Biles has withdrawn from the team final competition due to a medical issue. She will be assessed daily to determine medical clearance for future competitions.”
Biles had qualified for the individual finals in every discipline, but it’s unclear if she’ll be able to compete for more medals in Tokyo.
Its been another successful day for Britain’s athletes in Tokyo, with Tom Dean powering to gold in the men’s 200 metres freestyle.

Fellow Brit Duncan Scott took silver.
