Taylor Swift has criticised a Netflix show for containing a joke about her which the singer called “lazy” and “deeply sexist”.

In comedy-drama Ginny and Georgia, main characters Ginny Miller, played by Antonia Gentry, and her mother Georgia (Brianne Howey) were arguing about relationships.

Asked in the final episode of the series whether she had broken up her with her boyfriend, Ginny said: “What do you care? You go through men faster than Taylor Swift.”

On social media, Swift’s fans, known as “Swifties”, have hit out at the programme and its cast members, with some calling for a boycott of the show.

A Twitter user wrote: “Can’t believe things like this are still happening in 2021, it’s absolutely disgusting and misogynistic… RESPECT TAYLOR SWIFT.”

Swift, whose relationships have been publicly scrutinised for years, also then addressed the controversy.

She wrote on Twitter: “Hey Ginny & Georgia, 2010 called and it wants its lazy, deeply sexist joke back. How about we stop degrading hard working women by defining this horse s*** as FuNnY.”

She also called out the streaming giant, which released her documentary, Miss Americana, in January last year.

The 31-year-old, who has surprise-dropped two new albums since the coronavirus pandemic began, wrote: “Also, @netflix after Miss Americana this outfit doesn’t look cute on you. Happy Women’s History Month I guess.”

The US singer has addressed on several occasions in the past how the media discusses her relationships.

In 2015, she told Maxim magazine that a man writing about his feelings was “brave”, while a woman doing the same thing was deemed to be “oversharing or whining”.

Miss Americana covered her career over a number of years using behind the scenes footage. It dealt with how her relationships had been dissected by the public and press.

The US star has been in a relationship with actor Joe Alwyn since around 2016, but was previously linked with actor Tom Hiddleston and DJ Calvin Harris, among others.
