Six cyclists are in a critical condition after being hit by a truck in Arizona, with the driver chased down and shot by police.
It happened at about 7.25am (3.25pm UK time) in the town of Show Low, northeast of Phoenix, during the state championship road race.
Police said four people were in a critical condition and that two were critical but stable.
One person was taken to hospital by helicopter.
Officers pursued the driver, who fled the scene, and shot him behind a hardware store. The 35-year-old male suspect is critical but stable.
There were also two to three walk-in victims at the hospital, police added.
“Our community is shocked at this incident and our hearts and prayers are with the injured and their families,” said Show Low Police Department.
It happened during the Bike the Bluff event, Arizona’s 58-mile state championship race, which started at 6.45am.
The race has a teen category, as well as adults and masters, but there is no word yet on the ages of the victims.
