Seven people have been killed and at least six are injured after they were struck by a vehicle while waiting at a city bus stop, police in Brownsville, Texas, said Sunday.
Brownsville police investigator Martin Sandoval said the crash happened about 8:30am local time on Sunday at a bus stop near the Ozanam Center, shelter for migrants and the homeless.
Mr Sandoval told Fox News that some migrants were among the dead.
“We are doing an investigation in forms of intoxication to see if he was intoxicated at the time of the accident,” said
Mr Sandoval.
The border city of Brownsville is expecting to receive an influx of migrants when COVID-era restrictions expire on Thursday.
A male suspect has been charged with reckless driving, although more charges are expected to follow. He is under 24-hour guard and is receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.
