People have been warned by the coastguard to avoid a beach after a “substantial” cliff collapse in Norfolk.

A large section came down in Mundesley, north Norfolk, sometime between Wednesday night and Thursday morning, following heavy bouts of rainfall.

Pictures from the scene showed tonnes of soil and extra sand on the beach, covering wooden sea defences and almost reaching the sea.

HM Coastguard Bacton said: “Please be aware of our cliffs being unstable due to the recent rain.

“We have seen a substantial fall in Mundesley overnight, please do not go near the area.”

It urged people to call 999 and ask for the coastguard if they see anything dangerous on the coast.

One Facebook user said: “Hope sensible folks will understand and appreciate the warning how dangerous east coast erosion is to everyone.”

Videography company Mini Movies, which took photos of the fall, recalled in a social media post that it had been on Mundesley beach offering to film people’s dogs for a mini-movie.

It said: “One of the dog owners told us about a large landslide further down the beach.”

The firm added it used a drone to take the images and the landslide was “huge”.
