A pensioner died after falling from a special assistance lift at Edinburgh Airport, it has emerged.

It is understood the 81-year-old man plunged from the lift onto the tarmac while being helped off a plane on 28 November last year.

The man was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, where he died a week later on 7 December.

A spokesperson for Edinburgh Airport said: “We are aware of the death of an 81-year-old man following a fall at Edinburgh Airport.

“We offer our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.

“At this time we are cooperating fully with regulatory authorities in their investigations.”

A probe has been launched by Police Scotland and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the public body responsible for workplace safety.

Police Scotland said a report into the death will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal but there are “no suspicious circumstances”.

The force spokesperson added: “The Health and Safety Executive have been advised.”

An HSE spokesperson said: “Alongside Police Scotland, we continue to investigate an incident which happened on 28 November 2023 at Edinburgh Airport.”
