The MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club) has expelled one member and suspended two others following an altercation with Australia’s cricket team during the Ashes Test match against England in July.
The incident took place in the Long Room in the Lord’s pavilion followed the controversial run-out of England’s Jonny Bairstow, which was met with chants of “same old Aussies, always cheating” by the home crowd on a tense final day of the second Ashes Test.
Bairstow had ducked under a bouncing delivery which made its way through to wicketkeeper Alex Carey, before wandering out of his crease as he thought the ball was dead.
Carey threw the ball at the stumps and the run-out was given following a check – prompting claims of unsportsmanlike conduct.
Australia’s players were then confronted in the pavilion as they returned to their dressing room for lunch.
Three members were subsequently suspended and now the MCC has decided to issue further sanctions.
In a letter to members, chief executive and secretary Guy Lavender confirmed one member had been expelled and two others would be suspended for four-and-a-half years and 30 months respectively.
