Nine people have been arrested after Insulate Britain climate change protesters blocked part of the M25 for an eighth day.

Supporters of the group, an offshoot of Extinction Rebellion, have glued their hands to the ground at junction 30 at Thurrock, Essex.

Essex Police has said it is working to remove protesters from the junction “as quickly and safely as possible”.

Nine people have been arrested on suspicion of obstructing a highway.

Insulate Britain wants the government to insulate and retrofit homes across the UK to cut climate emissions.

The latest demonstration marks the eighth day of action from the climate change protest group on Britain’s busiest motorway in three weeks.

The force wrote on Twitter: “We are working to get the road reopened and traffic flowing again as soon as possible.”

It added: “We were called to reports of people blocking the road and officers responded within minutes.

“We are currently working to resolve the situation as quickly and safely as possible.

“We know this will be frustrating for people using the road but we appreciate your patience and understanding.”

The latest action comes a day after Surrey’s police and crime commissioner warned it is “very difficult” to charge environmental protesters after the same junction on the M25 was blocked twice in one day.

Insulate Britain has been repeatedly targeting the motorway as it calls on the government to insulate all UK homes by 2030.

Despite an injunction being obtained by the government against the group, they caused disruption on a roundabout at junction 3, the Swanley Interchange in Kent, at about 7:30am on Wednesday, by gluing themselves to the road.

It came nearly a week after the government was granted an extra injunction to prevent protesters from blocking the Port of Dover.

Police arrested 17 people as Insulate Britain demonstrators sat in the road to obstruct the port, calling for a “Churchillian response” to the “urgent horror” of the climate crisis.
