Atalanta footballers staying at a Manchester hotel were reportedly disturbed as the fire alarm rang multiple times on the night before a big game.

Players from Atalanta Bergamasca Calcio, a club based in Bergamo, Italy, were staying at The Edwardian Manchester hotel on Tuesday night, according to Sky Sports News.

The team is due to meet Manchester United in a Champions League fixture on Wednesday night.

But, according to a woman who said she was staying at the hotel on Tuesday night, the fire alarm went off at 4.51am, 5am, 5.36am, 6.11am, 6.31am and 7.13am.

Lorraine Duarte wrote on Twitter: “When you stay in the same hotel as the Manchester United opposition the night before a big game, of course you are rudely woken by… fire alarms.”

She gave the times of the alarms, adding: “This is ridiculous”.

Sky Sports News reported that Roksana Malinovska, wife of Atalanta midfielder Ruslan Malinovskyi, appeared to accuse locals in Manchester of deliberately setting off the fire alarm to impact the players’ preparations for the match.

She wrote on Instagram: “Hellish night in Manchester. Throughout the night in the hotel the fire alarm was turned on at full power five times.

“It happened just when the team arrived, and only at night! Do you think this is an accident? I don’t. From such a ‘warm’ welcome from the local population, it becomes terrible in the heart.

“I hope that our fans will support the team in our home game, and maybe the same thing will suddenly happen in an Italian hotel.”

Atalanta are currently top of Group F in the Champions League standings, following a 2-2 draw with Villarreal and a 1-0 win over Young Boys, while Manchester United are sat in third.

Sky News has requested comment from Radisson Hotels, which owns The Edwardian Manchester.
