A man has been charged after West Bromwich Albion footballer Romaine Sawyers was racially abused online.
Simon Silwood is accused of sending an offensive message to the 29-year-old midfielder via social media in January, West Midlands Police said.
It is alleged to have been sent following Albion’s 5-0 defeat to Manchester City.
The investigation has been carried out by PC Stuart Ward, the first dedicated hate crime officer within a football policing unit.
Silwood, 49, from Kingswinford, near Dudley, is due before the town’s magistrates’ court on 29 April.
