A man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering his wife at their Yorkshire home after police found him in Scotland.

Mark Barrott, 54, from Leeds, was detained at 4:30am by Police Scotland in the Elgin area.

He was arrested on suspicion of the murder of 50-year-old nurse Eileen Barrott, who was found dead at the couple’s home in Naburn Fold, Whinmoor, on Sunday.

West Yorkshire Police said he will be returned to the force’s area, before being interviewed by detectives from the homicide and major enquiry team.

“We would like to thank all the members of the public who contacted us with information, and also our colleagues in Police Scotland for their assistance and support with this investigation” said DCI Vanessa Rolfe.

Police had urged Mr Barrott to hand himself in, issuing appeals after he was sighted in Edinburgh and Aberdeen, including CCTV of him at Leeds railway station on Sunday morning.

He was then tracked to an address in Elgin, which is almost 400 miles away from Leeds, but had left by the time police arrived.

Neighbours of the couple said they had lived at their Leeds home for 20 years and have two grown-up children – a daughter and a son.
