North Korea has test-fired a new type of tactical guided weapon which it claims is of “great significance”.
The reclusive state’s dictator Kim Jong Un observed the test, and was pictured beaming as generals clapped behind him.
North Korean state media did not say when the test took place and gave no details of the missile involved.
But South Korea’s military said it detected two projectiles launched from the coastal city of Hamhung early on Saturday night.
The projectiles flew about 68 miles (110km) with a maximum speed of under Mach 4.
North Korean state media said Kim Jong Un “gave important instructions on further building up the defence capabilities and nuclear combat forces of the country.”
It added: “The new-type tactical guided weapon system…is of great significance in drastically improving the firepower of the frontline long-range artillery units and enhancing the efficiency in the operation of tactical nukes.”

North Korea held celebrations to mark the birthday of Kim Jong Un’s grandfather on Friday, but state media did not show any military hardware on display.
However, satellite imagery suggests preparations for a parade of missiles and other military hardware have been made in recent weeks.
They may be displayed on 25 April, when the country celebrates the founding anniversary of North Korea’s army.
