Sir Keir Starmer has been mobbed by dozens of protesters shouting “traitor” at him in Westminster and had to be escorted through the crowd by police officers.
In video footage posted on social media, Sir Keir was seen walking near to Parliament surrounded by police officers as he was confronted by a group, some of whom repeated a Savile slur first used by Prime Minister Boris Johnson in Parliament.
The Labour leader was rushed into the back of a police vehicle and driven away from the scene.
In the footage, Sir Keir appeared to be verbally abused, with shouts overheard of “traitor” and “why aren’t you opposing?”
David Lammy, shadow foreign secretary, was walking with the Labour leader at the time of the incident.
Protesters, claiming to be from the “Freedom Movement”, were seen displaying signs opposing mandatory vaccination and the use of restrictions to prevent COVID-19 deaths.
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, wrote on Twitter: “This is what happens when fake news is amplified and given credibility by people who should know better.
