Kensington Palace could be getting its very own superhero after the Duchess of Cambridge joked about buying Prince William a Spider-Man costume. 

Kate was speaking to a martial arts teacher who had dressed as the web-slinger during lockdown walks in an effort to raise the spirits of local children.

Telling Jason Baird that his idea was “very cool”, she joked about getting the costume for her husband and said: “I’ll see if it takes on the trend here at Kensington Palace.

“Unfortunately I’m not so sure if he’s going to get the air clearance that you’ve got.”

A photograph of Mr Baird is among 100 pictures chosen for Kate’s Hold Still exhibition and book, which encouraged the public to document life during the pandemic.

The image shows the martial arts teacher in mid-air in a front garden as children watch on with excitement from inside the home.

Speaking to him on the phone, Kate – a keen photographer herself – said the picture was “amazingly captured”.

“Thank you for sending in your photograph because there are some really emotive and really sad images and stories that we had,” she said.

“But this brought, you know, particularly to the judging panel, it was such a wonderful positive image of community spirit.”

Mr Baird, who runs Jason Baird’s Black Belt Academy in Stockport, and his friend Andrew Baldock, became known as the “Stockport Spider-Men” for their costumed walks.

The father-of-two said that when the coronavirus restrictions in spring last year meant people were only allowed outside for an hour a day, he wanted to “try and cheer the kids up”.

“It was more a case of trying to bring a few smiles and stuff,” he told Kate.

He added that children in his area started dressing up as Spider-Man too and had signs in their windows saying “Spider-Man stop outside my house”.

Earlier this month, Kate revealed copies of her photography book had been hidden around the UK for fans to find.

The royal was seen leaving a copy at the Queen Victoria statue outside Kensington Palace Gardens.
