The Jan. 6 select committee has requested House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s testimony about his interactions with Donald Trump as a mob swarmed the Capitol.
The request follows months of speculation about when the panel would seek the California Republican’s cooperation with their probe.
The committee has raised questions about McCarthy’s conversation with Trump on Jan. 6, which was fleshed out during the then-president’s impeachment trial last February. According to Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-Wash.), McCarthy described the call as tense and that Trump initially suggested it wasn’t his supporters storming the Capitol.
When McCarthy told him it was, Trump replied, “Well, Kevin, I guess these people are more upset about the election than you are,” per Herrera Beutler’s account of McCarthy’s summary of the call.
