Around a million people are expected to descend on London today for Queen Elizabeth II’s state funeral.

World leaders, politicians and celebrities will be among the 2,000 guests who will enter the doors of Westminster Abbey for the historic service.

But it is perhaps the everyday members of the public, many of whom will have never known another British monarch, who will most want to pay their respects to a sovereign who served them for 70 years.

On a crisp autumn morning in the capital, people who camped overnight woke to take their place at the barriers along The Mall.

Similar scenes took place in Windsor as mourners gathered down The Long Walk.
