Huge sinkhole shuts roads after water main burst

Repair work is under way after a huge sinkhole opened in Liverpool.

The 4.5 metres (15ft) by six-metres (20ft) sinkhole in Green Lane at the junction of Prescot Road, Old Swan, appeared late on Friday after a large water main ruptured.

Fire crews worked to restrict the flow of water as road closures were set up – some of which are expected to remain in place for the next two weeks.

Many nearby residents were left with poor water pressure or no water, but United Utilities later said supplies were back on for those who had been affected.

The water company said customers may notice some discolouration to their supply, which can happen due to naturally occurring sediment being disturbed in the pipes, and advised them to let the “kitchen tap run at a gentle trickle” to help clear it.

It said in a statement: “Overnight, our engineers diverted water supplies through other parts of the water network so that the burst pipe could be shut off. Our water tankers are also pumping supplies into the system to boost the pressure for customers.

“Repair work will be getting underway today (Saturday), and the road will need to stay closed for at least two weeks while these repairs are carried out.

“We thank customers for their patience in the meantime and we apologise for any inconvenience.”
