Evacuation efforts have been in a race against time as countries try to get vulnerable Afghans and their own citizens out of Afghanistan as the 31 August deadline looms.

It comes as two explosions were reported outside Kabul airport on Thursday, with fatalities and injuries.

Tens of thousands of people have been flown out of the country since 13 August, two days before the Taliban seized control of Kabul.

There are many more to be evacuated, but some nations have already halted their efforts and said people will be left behind.

Sky News looks at the global evacuation efforts:

United States

Number evacuated (approx): 88,000, including 4,500 Americans

Operation ends: 31 August

Secretary of State Antony Blinken said around 4,500 Americans had been flown out, with diplomats in touch with 500 more. The US believes around 1,500 American citizens remain in Afghanistan.

The head of the US military’s European Command said on Wednesday that more than 7,000 evacuees from Afghanistan have been flown to eight locations around Europe, mainly in Germany and Italy. They will then finalise their visas there before resettling in the US.

The US military will continue evacuations from Kabul airport until the 31 August deadline if needed but says that on the last couple of days it will prioritise the removal of US troops and military equipment.

UK

Number evacuated (approx): 15,000

Operation ends: 31 August

Boris Johnson confirmed 15,000 people have now left under the Operation Pitting evacuation mission, which began in April.

Since 13 August, 12,279 people have been evacuated, including 1,988 people on eight RAF flights in the past 24 hours, armed forces minister James Heappey said.

Of those evacuated so far, reports vary at between 5,500 – 7,000 being Afghans and their families.

About 2,000 people eligible for the UK government’s relocation programme – Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (ARAP) – remain in Afghanistan, the BBC reported – but the UK hopes to evacuate more in the coming days.

However, defence secretary Ben Wallace admitted not everyone eligible will be evacuated by the deadline.

France

Number evacuated (approx): 2,100

Operation ends: Friday

France has confirmed it will no longer be able to evacuate people from Afghanistan after Friday.

Prime Minister Jean Castex told RTL radio that airlifts will “continue until tomorrow evening”.

Reports suggest at least 2,000 Afghans and 100 French people have been evacuated by France since the beginning of the operation on 16 August, with a “few dozen” French citizens remaining in Afghanistan, Transport Minister Jean-Baptiste Djebbari said.

Germany

Number evacuated (approx): 5,100

Operation ends: unclear

Germany’s Bundeswehr has reportedly managed to safely evacuate more than 5,100 people, including more than 3,600 Afghans.

The foreign ministry said on Wednesday they believe more than 200 German citizens are still in Afghanistan.

Ministry spokesman Christofer Burger said that there is “fuzziness” around the figure of those who still remain.

Chancellor Angela Merkel told parliament on Wednesday that evacuation efforts will continue “as long as possible”, though reports have suggested Germany will end its operations as soon as Thursday.

Italy

Number evacuated (approx): 4,400

Operation ends: The Italian government has not yet said

A total of 4,400 Afghan nationals who worked with Italian institutions and charities have been flown to safety, the country’s defence ministry said on Wednesday.

A flight leaving on Thursday came under fire but the aircraft was not damaged, the Italian defence ministry said.

The Netherlands

Number evacuated (approx): 1,000+

Operation ends: today

In a letter, the Dutch government said: “The Netherlands has been informed by the United States that it has to depart today and will most likely perform the last flights later today.”

It described the situation as a “painful moment” because people eligible for evacuation will be left behind.

The Dutch government has reportedly conducted 16 evacuation flights out of Kabul to countries in the Middle East, with nine flights bringing evacuees to the Netherlands.

Denmark

Number evacuated (approx): 1,000

Operation ends: completed on Wednesday

Denmark has already stopped airlifting evacuees from Kabul, with Danish defence minister Trine Bramsen warning it is no longer safe. Their final airlift carried 90 passengers from Afghanistan.

Belgium

Number evacuated (approx): 1,400

Operation ends: already completed

Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said the country finished its evacuation efforts on Wednesday after the US warned a terrorist attack was imminent.

Its final flight to Islamabad, Pakistan, left on Wednesday night.

Sweden

Number evacuated (approx): 771

Operation ends: unclear

Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde has said another 227 were evacuated on Wednesday – a mix of Swedish citizens, people with permanent residency permits and local hires.

Norway

Number evacuated (approx): 374

Operation ends: unclear

Two planes from Afghanistan with a total of 278 passengers landed in Oslo on Thursday morning, Norwegian news agency NTB reported.

Hungary

Number evacuated (approx): 540

Operation ends: already completed

Hungary ended evacuations in Afghanistan on Wednesday, Hungarian Defence Minister Tibor Benko said on Thursday.

Those evacuated included Hungarian, Austrian, Afghan and American nationals, who were flown by military plane from Kabul to Uzbekistan, and then by commercial airline jet to Budapest.

Mr Benko said 57 families had been airlifted, among them 180 children.

Poland

Number evacuated (approx): 900

Operation ends: already completed

About 300 women and 300 children were part of the evacuation effort, Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said on Thursday.

He said the final flight landed in Warsaw at 8.30am on Thursday.

Lithuania

Number evacuated (approx): 50

Operation ends: unclear

The first group of Afghan interpreters – 50 – who worked with Lithuanian forces in Afghanistan from 2005 to 2003 touched down in Vilnius this week.

Another 67 were due to be evacuated on Wednesday so that all 117 who worked with Lithuania will be evacuated.

Bulgaria

Number evacuated (approx): 29

Operation ends: unclear

Reports suggest around 29 Bulgarian citizens have been evacuated from Afghanistan so far.

Bulgaria has said it will grant asylum to about 70 Afghan citizens who worked for its embassy in Kabul and military missions, as well as their families.

Canada

Number evacuated (approx): 3,700

Operation ends: already completed

Canada ended its evacuation effort on Thursday.

Acting chief of the defence staff General Wayne Eyre said: “We stayed in Afghanistan as long as we could … we wish we could have stayed longer and rescued everyone.”

Australia

Number evacuated (approx): 4,000

Operation ends: 31 August

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the number of people who have been evacuated by Australia is triple the amount he thought was possible last week.

Australia has said it is willing to extend evacuations beyond 31 August if the US does so, but warned on Wednesday a terror attack was imminent at Kabul airport.

Hundreds of Afghans offered an evacuation flight have been turned away by Australian soldiers over an apparent lack of communication and adherence to bureaucracy.

New Zealand

Number evacuated: 200

Operation ends: soon

New Zealand’s government will not provide exact numbers, citing privacy and security reasons, but Rear Admiral Jim Gilmour, commander of joint forces in New Zealand, told Stuff on Wednesday “about 200” had been evacuated so far.

The foreign ministry stopped accepting resettlement applications for the 37 Afghan translators and workers who assisted its troops from 11.59pm on Wednesday, saying it was too dangerous.

It said it would continue to process applications submitted before that but did not specify when its final flights would be.

Turkey

Number evacuated (approx): 1,400

Operation ends: 31 August

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said about 1,000 Turkish citizens have been evacuated.

The country started moving troops out on Thursday after the Taliban requested it do so before 31 August despite asking Turkey to continue to provide technical support at Kabul airport.

It is not clear whether Turkey will provide that support if it does not have troops to provide security.

Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said on Tuesday: “We want good relations with Turkey, the Turkish government and the Muslim people of the Turkish nation.”

Russia

Number evacuated (approx): 360

Operation ends: unknown

About 360 Russian citizens were flown out on Wednesday on Russia’s first evacuation flight.

A total of 500 are expected to be evacuated but the ambassador in Kabul said 100 Russian citizens have decided to remain in Afghanistan for now.
