The UK government has announced changes to its travel rules that will come into effect at 4am on Sunday.

From 8 August, people entering England from France will no longer have to quarantine if they have had both doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.

There will also be changes to the green, amber and red lists.

What are the rules for all travellers now?

The government lists countries and territories as red, amber or green – with different rules for each of the three lists. There is also a green watchlist.

All travellers aged 11 or older need to take a coronavirus test before coming to England.

They need to book and pay for a COVID-19 test which will be taken on or before the second day after they arrive in England. Children aged 4 and under are exempt from this requirement.

If the test is positive they will need to quarantine. If NHS Test and Trace notifies them they have travelled to England with someone who has tested positive they will need to quarantine.

They need to complete a passenger locator form.

People who have travelled through amber or red list countries in the 10 days prior to arriving in England will need to follow the rules for that country.

COVID-19 tests and quarantine on arrival are not required for people travelling within the UK, Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man and who have not passed through any other countries in the previous 10 days.

India, Bahrain, Qatar and the UAE. They are currently on the red list.

What are the rules for travelling from amber list countries?

Travellers arriving in England who are not fully vaccinated must quarantine at home or in the place they are staying for 10 days – unless they have been fully vaccinated in the UK, US, some other European countries or under the UK vaccination programme overseas.

Those who are double-jabbed must have had their second dose at least 14 whole days before the date they enter England.

Those who are under 18 when they arrive in England and living in the UK or in a country with a vaccination programme approved by the UK do not have to self-isolate either.

People taking part in a UK-approved vaccine trial are also exempt from quarantine.

Travellers who are not exempt from self-isolating must take a COVID-19 test on their eighth day after arrival – in addition to the test on day two which is required for everyone.

For those who have to quarantine, it may be possible to shorten the duration by paying for a private COVID-19 test on the fifth day through the Test to Release scheme.

If the result from the second and fifth day tests is negative quarantine can be ended early.

What are the current rules for France, which is on the ‘amber-plus’ list?

All travellers from France must quarantine and take COVID-19 tests on their second and eighth days after arriving in England.

There are no exceptions to these rules, not even for those who are vaccinated.

France is the only country on the amber-plus list.

Anyone who arrives in England from a red list country has to stay in hotel quarantine for ten days and take COVID-19 tests on their second and eighth days in the nation.

The cost will increase for people aged 13 and over from 12 August, the government said, “in order to ensure taxpayers are not subsidising the costs of staying in these facilities”.

There are alternative payment arrangements available to those who “genuinely cannot afford to pay”.
