Non-league club Boreham Wood recorded a huge FA Cup upset after beating Championship high-fliers Bournemouth to reach the fifth round – and set up a plum tie with Premier League side Everton.
The Hertfordshire team – who play in the fifth-tier National League – secured a 1-0 victory over their opponents who are 74 places higher than them in the English football pyramid.
Boreham Wood’s 37-year-old captain Mark Ricketts scored the winning goal at Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium.
It is probably the biggest win in the club’s 74-year history and has earned them a lucrative televised trip to Frank Lampard’s Everton — a fitting reward for club chairman Danny Hunter who remortgaged his house to help the club through lockdown.
Incredibly, the Boreham Wood side are yet to concede a goal in the FA Cup this season.
Bournemouth manager Scott Parker, whose side are third in the Championship, said he had “nothing but praise and credit to Boreham Wood”.
“Well played to them, this is the magic of the FA Cup but you never want to be on the end of it,” he added.
In another shock, FA Cup holders Leicester City were knocked out after they were thumped 4-1 by Championship side Nottingham Forest.
The game was marred, however, after Forest players were attacked by a pitch invader who was tackled by stewards and arrested.
Sunday’s matches came a day after two near-upsets in the cup.
Sixth-tier Kidderminster Harriers almost pulled off a stunning win against Premier League side West Ham United, eventually losing 2-1 after extra time.
Meanwhile, European champions Chelsea edged out League One team Plymouth Argyle with a 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge.
Middlesbrough kicked off the weekend’s action by knocking out 12-time winners Manchester United after a nerve-jangling penalty shootout at Old Trafford.
The FA Cup fifth round ties are:
• Luton Town v Chelsea
• Crystal Palace v Stoke City
• Peterborough United v Manchester City
• Liverpool v Norwich
• Southampton v West Ham
• Middlesbrough v Tottenham Hotspur
• Nottingham Forest v Huddersfield Town
• Everton v Boreham Wood
The matches will be played in the week commencing Monday 28 February.
