The daughter of David Haines who was allegedly kidnapped and killed by an IS terror cell in Syria will face one of the men thought to be involved in a US court this week.

El Shafee Elsheikh, 33, will stand trial on Tuesday in the US, accused of conspiracy to commit murder and lethal hostage taking.

He denies the charges.

Elsheikh was a member of a cell known as the IS Beatles – a group of British men who released videos of themselves murdering journalists and aid workers such as James Foley and Peter Kassig, in Syria.

Two members of the group, Elsheikh and Alexanda Kotey, were captured and held in Iraq before being flown to the UK, while Mohammed Emwazi was killed in a drone strike in 2015.

Kotey pleaded guilty to the murders of journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff and aid workers Kayla Mueller and Peter Kassig last year, and will be sentenced next month.

Final group member Aine Lesley Davis was convicted of terrorism charges in Turkey in 2017.

Bethany Haines, 24, the daughter of David Haines who was said to be a victim of the so-called IS Beatles, will be at the trial of Elsheikh in Virginia this week to urge him to “to do the right thing” and reveal where her father is buried.

Speaking to the Sunday Times, Ms Haines said: “I’ve prepared for this for years.

“I want to be able to see him at all times; to see his facial expressions.”

“He thinks he’s above this all… it’s all beneath him. He even smirked at a witness at an earlier hearing.”

She is hoping to read a victim statement to Elsheikh, if he is convicted.

The charges being faced by Elsheikh carry the potential for a death sentence, but prosecutors have told British officials that they will not seek penalty against him or Kotey.
