OJ Simpson is a “completely free man” after he was discharged from parole early for good behaviour.

The 74-year-old former NFL star was convicted in 2008 of robbery and kidnapping in a dispute over sports memorabilia at a Las Vegas casino hotel.

He served nine years in a Nevada prison and was released on parole in 2017.

Nevada State Police spokeswoman Kim Yoko Smith said Mr Simpson had been on parole since 1 October 2017 and his term would “otherwise expire” on 9 February next year – but he was instead discharged on 1 December.

Simpson’s lawyer, Malcolm LaVergne, said: “Mr Simpson is a completely free man now.”

He declined to talk about Simpson’s future plans, including whether he intends to remain in Nevada.

Simpson, also a former actor, lives in a gated community in Las Vegas where he plays golf.

He also frequently takes to Twitter to offer opinions about college and pro sports, especially American football.

“Life is fine,” he told the Associated Press during an interview in June 2019.

Acquitted in 1995

Simpson was acquitted by a jury in 1995 of killing his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman.

In 1997, he lost a civil wrongful death suit and the court awarded a $33.5m judgment against him.

Simpson’s saga makes him, in the words of one of his Las Vegas trial lawyers, one of the most famous people on the planet.

NFL achievements and acting career

Nicknamed The Juice, he rose to fame in US sport for his achievements in the NFL.

He was enrolled in the sport’s hall of fame and was the first running back to gain 2,000 yards in a season with the Buffalo Bills in 1973.

But he also became known as a pitchman, football commentator and actor, appearing in a number of TV and film roles including the Naked Gun movie series.
