The body of a teenage boy has been recovered from a river in West Yorkshire, police have said.

Officers were called to the River Calder in Brighouse at 2.38pm on Tuesday following reports a child had got into difficulty in the water while playing with friends.

Following an urgent search, the body of a 13-year-old boy was recovered from the river, West Yorkshire Police said.

Witnesses told local media that between 30 and 50 teenagers had been swimming in the water, with some seen jumping off a bridge along Huntingdon Road.

Chief Superintendent Sarah Baker, district commander of Calderdale Police, said in a statement: “Whilst investigations into what took place are at an early stage, indications are that this is a tragic incident in which a teenage boy has lost his life.

“Specially trained officers are working to support the victim’s family at this devastating time, and our thoughts are with them.

“I would ask anyone who saw what happened and who may have not yet spoken with authorities, to contact Calderdale CID on 101 referencing police log 989 of June 1st.”

It comes on the same day the body of a missing boy was found in the River Thames in Buckinghamshire.

Thames Valley Police received reports of a child not emerging from the water after getting into distress between Bourne End and Cookham on Monday.

Following a search by police and the fire service, divers recovered a boy’s body from the water on Tuesday. His next of kin has been informed.

The day before, a woman’s body was recovered in a separate incident along the River Thames two miles away in Maidenhead. Police found the woman unresponsive in the water at 7.15am on Monday.

Emergency services nationwide have warned of the dangers of swimming in open water amid the recent hot weather.

Tuesday was the hottest day of the year so far, after 25.7C (78.3F) was recorded at Heathrow Airport, surpassing the 25.1C (77.2F) at Kinlochewe in Scotland on Bank Holiday Monday.
