Around 7.5 million children’s bath toys based on Baby Shark have been recalled, after reports of children being injured through lacerations and puncture wounds.

Manufacturer Zuru, which is based in California in the US, said it is recalling the full-size and mini versions of the robotic Baby Shark toys which have a hard plastic fin – which it says pose injury risks.

Some 12 injuries have been reported so far, with the company’s full-sized Robo Alive Junior Baby Shark Sing & Swim Bath Toys, following children sitting or falling on them.

In nine of those cases, the injured children required stitches or medical attention, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

“Out of an abundance of caution”, Zuru is also recalling the Robo Alive Junior Mini Baby Shark Swimming Bath Toys, despite no reported injuries.

Customers are advised to immediately stop using the toys, and cut off or bend the fin, write “recalled” on it, and contact Zuru with a photograph for a full refund.

The toys in question were sold in the US in stores such as Walmart and Target, as well as Amazon between May 2019 through to March 2023.

They have been available in the UK, with the country appearing as an option on the refund form.

Sky News has reached out to Zuru for more clarification.

The newest versions of the toy, with a silicone fin, are not part of the recall.

In a statement, the firm wrote: “We want to assure our customers that we are committed to the highest levels of safety and quality of all our products, and we have implemented measures to prevent future incidents by working to promptly remove these products from retail and replace them with a newly designed product.”
