The police officer arrested on suspicion of the kidnap and murder of Sarah Everard has been treated in hospital for a head injury sustained while in custody.

The suspect has since been discharged and returned to a police station, the Metropolitan Police said.

He was found collapsed and unconscious in his cell today after suffering serious head wounds, according to The Sun.

The Met said: “The suspect was taken to a hospital for treatment to a head injury sustained while in custody.

“He has since been discharged and returned to custody. We are not prepared to discuss further.”

The serving Metropolitan Police officer was arrested on Tuesday night on suspicion of kidnap and later of murder.

Ms Everard, a 33-year-old marketing executive, went missing on the evening of Wednesday 3 March while she walked back from a friend’s house in Clapham, south London to her home in Brixton.

Police searching for Ms Everard discovered human remains yesterday in woodland in Kent.

The remains have not yet been identified.

Flowers have been left at the scene in Ashford.

A tribute read: “From women everywhere, we hope to change the world. All our love x x x x x x.”

Another said: “Sarah Everard we send our love and prayers. We will always remember you.”

The events have prompted an outpouring of shock and anger as women across the country shared their own experiences of feeling unsafe.

A vigil called “Reclaim these streets” is due to take place at Clapham Common bandstand in south London on Saturday.
