A British grandmother has died and her grandson was injured after she crashed down a cliff in Benidorm.
The 58-year-old woman had been riding a scooter-type electric vehicle when the incident happened on Wednesday afternoon, according to Spanish media.
Spanish newspaper El Periodico reported that the woman drove over the cliff edge in the Serra Gelada Natural Park, and her eight-year-old grandson also suffered injuries.
It is not clear why the vehicle went off the road before falling off the cliff, in an area of difficult access, the outlet reported.
Seeing her go down the slope, her companion – on a similar vehicle – tried to get to her and sustained injuries herself in the effort.
Police have opened an investigation to clarify the causes of the accident and whether the vehicle complied with all requirements.
A Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office spokesperson said: “We are supporting the family of a British woman who has died in Spain and are in touch with local authorities.”
