Firefighters are tackling more blazes in London after record temperatures left land around the capital parched.

Two grass fires have broken out in southeast London – in West Wickham and Bexleyheath.

Workers on the land in West Wickham scrambled with a tractor to create a “fire break” in the field as fire crews doused the flames.

In Bexleyheath, six fire engines and about 40 firefighters were tackling a blaze on a wooded triangle of land in between homes.

Residents were told to stay indoors as smoke billowed across streets near Longleigh Lane.

Around two hectares of grass and shrubland was said to be alight. There are no reports of any injuries.

London Fire Brigade said the blaze was under control, but crews would remain at the scene for now.

It comes a week after a major incident was declared across London following a “huge surge” in fires caused by the heatwave, which saw temperatures topping 40C (104F) for the first time.
