Police are investigating a death threat sent to former Tory leadership contender Penny Mordaunt while she was part of the race for Number 10.

According to the Portsmouth News, the letter – sent to the MP’s office in the city – threatened to “shoot her in the head” and “kill her family”.

Hampshire Police confirmed they had received the report, adding: “We attended and safeguarding measures were put in place to minimise the risk to the woman and her family, employees and the wider community.”

Inquiries are ongoing, and the force is working with the Parliamentary Liaison Team.

“We take the safeguarding of our MPs incredibly seriously and there are robust systems in place to ensure they can carry out their job safely,” a spokesperson added.

Ms Mordaunt made it to the final three of the leadership contest, but lost out on a place on the final ballot to former chancellor Rishi Sunak and Foreign Secretary Liz Truss.
