A campaigner is trying close a legal “loophole” and change Instagram’s policies after a fake account impersonated her and posted explicit content.
Jamie Klingler, co-founder of Reclaim these Streets, was alerted to an Instagram account in her name posting the fake images last week.
She resorted to asking her 18,000 Twitter followers to report the account to get it removed, as she was unable to do it herself.
A spokesperson for Instagram-owner Meta said: “It’s against our rules to harass or impersonate people, and we’re sorry to hear that Jamie was targeted in this way. The account responsible was removed from Instagram.”
Ms Klingler claims the account was created to “intimidate, embarrass and silence” her and she reported it to the Metropolitan Police, but the investigation has been closed.
“An assessment of the available evidence determined that there was no realistic prospect of identifying any suspects and as such, the crime was closed”, the force said.
However, London’s victims commissioner Claire Waxman is due to meet with the campaigner to discuss her experiences of online harm, and try to close a loophole in the new Online Safety Bill, which doesn’t legislate against non-deep fake pornographic abuse online.
“At least it feels like something good can come out of it. It felt great when she reached out to me – I felt like she was taking it seriously,” Ms Klinger said.
