Shannen Doherty has been awarded $6.3m (£4.6m) in a lawsuit over her fire-damaged house.

The 50-year-old’s home in Malibu, California, was ruined by the Woolsey Fire in 2018 and she accused her insurer State Farm of failing to pay out enough money.

She had reportedly been living in rental accommodation during the legal battle.

The jury found that State Farm’s failure to pay policy benefits was “unreasonable and without proper cause”.

The amount covers damage to the house and property, emotional distress and legal fees.

Doherty, who rose to fame in the 1990s hit series Beverly Hills 90210 as well as Charmed and Heathers, revealed in February last year that she has stage four breast cancer.

She had originally been diagnosed in 2015 but the disease returned.

Before the jury’s decision, her lawyers had said: “Instead of living out her remaining years peacefully in her home, Ms Doherty remains displaced and battling with her insurance company.”

Afterwards, her lawyer Devin McRae said: “We thank the members of the jury for their thoughtful consideration of Shannen’s case.

“We are happy they saw the case the way we do.

“This should send a message to State Farm and other institutions that they should not forget they are dealing with human beings.”

State Farm said: “We empathise with Ms Doherty’s health and wish her the best.

“We are disappointed by the jury’s decision and respectfully disagree with it.

“We will explore all available legal options, including appealing the verdict.”

The Woolsey Fire, which started in November 2018, burned through almost 100,000 acres of land, destroying 1,643 structures, killing three people, and forcing more than 295,000 to flee their homes.
