Fans of iconic 90s films rejoice – because it looks like The Bodyguard is getting a remake.

The 1992 film, which starred Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, told the story of a music star and the man hired to protect her.

It became a hit film across the world, and its soundtrack remains one of the biggest selling in history, largely down to classic Whitney tracks I Will Always Love You and I Have Nothing.

But now, nearly 30 years later, Variety says that a new iteration of the film is in the works, with playwright Matthew Lopez penning a script.

Warner Bros, the studio behind the Harry Potter and DC Universe films, are said to be on board, but no casting choices were revealed.

Houston, who passed away in 2012, played the actress and singer Rachel Marron in the film, while Costner starred as Frank Farmer – a former secret service agent whose job it was to protect Houston’s character from a stalker – but instead falls in love with her.

It was roundly panned upon release, being largely described as cheesy and melodramatic, earning it seven nominations at the Golden Raspberry Awards (The Razzies) – a ceremony which recognises the less good films in Hollywood.

Worst film, worst actor and worst actress were among the nods the movie got from the Razzies.

However, despite the criticisms, it went on to be a cultural phenomenon and has ended up being a much-loved film since its release.

The Bodyguard did have some awards success though, with the soundtrack winning a Grammy for album of the year, and a number of American Music Awards.

It has even been made into a popular musical, which has seen productions on the West End and Broadway, as well as getting UK and US tours.
