The Premier League could ask fans to stay away from matches unless they have been fully vaccinated or can provide evidence of a recent negative COVID test.

It comes despite the government’s U-turn on vaccine passports.

Premier League clubs will continue to employ COVID marshals to check supporters’ coronavirus certificates once they are in stadiums.

The scrapping of plans to introduce vaccine passports for crowded venues such as football grounds and nightclubs was announced on Sunday.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid said the proposals “will not be going ahead” in comments made days after ministers had defended the policy in front of sceptical MPs.

Boris Johnson previously announced that members of the public would be required to show proof they have had two COVID-19 vaccine jabs in order to enter venues in England with large crowds, like football stadiums and nightclubs.

But a backlash from Tory MPs resulted in the government backing down from the plans.

Mr Javid said he had “never liked the idea of saying to people you must show your papers or something to do what is just an everyday activity, but we were right to properly look at it”.

He also said the government was keeping the vaccine passport measure in reserve as a potential option.

The Premier League are expected to reiterate their stance on double vaccine doses or negative tests in the coming days.

In a video for the Premier League, England’s deputy chief medical officer, Professor Jonathan Van-Tam, called on fans to get both vaccinations and stay at home if they show COVID symptoms.

It remains to be seen how COVID checks will be fully implemented at large stadiums.
