Veteran Bollywood actor Anupam Shyam has died at the age of 63, his friend has said.
Shyam had been in hospital in Mumbai being treated for a kidney infection last week, but went on to suffer multiple organ failure, according to Yashpal Sharma.
He is best known to UK fans for his appearance in Slumdog Millionaire, but Shyam also has dozens of Indian film credits, including for Nayjak: The Real Hero, Dil Se and Lagaan.
I got to know that he's no more. So we rushed here & found he was still breathing. The doctor later declared him dead. He was hospitalised for 4 days. The actor also had a starring role in the STAR Plus series Mann Ke Awaaz Pratigya, which had just begun shooting again.
Speaking to local media, Yashpal Sharma said that the actor passed away with his brothers Anurag and Kanchan by his side.
He added overnight: “The doctors informed us about his death 40 minutes ago. I was at the hospital, with his brothers Anurag and Kanchan. His body is still there in the hospital.”
“It’ll be brought to his residence, New Dindoshi… in the morning. The funeral will take place later in the day.”
He had recently undergone kidney dialysis, and last year had asked his colleagues for help with treatment, after having exhausted his savings.
