Another 32,551 coronavirus cases and 35 deaths within 28 days of a positive test have been reported on Thursday.

Today’s figures compare to 32,548 COVID cases and 33 deaths recorded on Wednesday.

This time last week, 28,008 cases and 16 deaths were reported.

It comes as another 258,430 COVID vaccine doses were administered on Wednesday – 86,953 first jabs and 171,477 second doses.

It means the total number of people who have had a first jab now stands at 45,601,445 and 34,198,779 have had a full course of inoculations.

Meanwhile, fully vaccinated adults and all children will no longer have to quarantine on their return from amber list countries from 19 July.

Making a statement on international travel in the Commons, Grant Shapps said those who have received two jabs and those aged under 18 will no longer have to self-isolate for 10 days after their return to the UK – but will still have to take a PCR test on their second day back.

The transport secretary also confirmed the government’s guidance that people should not travel to amber list countries will be lifted on the same July date, meaning hopeful holidaymakers can travel for leisure purposes and to see family members.

New Test and Trace figures have revealed COVID cases in England rose by 71% in the week to 30 June compared to the previous seven days, with a total of 135,685 people testing positive.

It is the highest number since the week to 3 February.

The surge in new cases comes after the government revealed its plans for “Freedom Day” on 19 July, when all remaining restrictions will be lifted contingent on a final decision set to be made next Monday.
