But the recall of this image over fears it has been “altered” will only fuel the fires of rumourmongering.
It has also put increasing pressure on Kensington Palace to issue a response beyond “no comment”.
They knew there would be huge interest in the photo.
This is the first public appearance of the princess since her abdominal surgery in January.
We were told back then it was likely she wouldn’t be back at work this side of Easter.
And of course, she has every right to privacy while recuperating from her operation.
But the vacuum of information about one of the most popular royals was filled with questions and outlandish speculation about her health.
This photo certainly suggests the princess was doing well. Although her return to work remains far from confirmed.
It’s worth remembering photos aren’t physical pictures, they are digital images.
And picture agencies do use computer software to detect alterations.
The bigger problem here is the issue of trust and whether this has been undermined.
