More rain is set to soak the UK this week after this weekend’s downpours brought localised flooding across parts of England and Wales.

Millions of Britons across the country were caught up in the damp conditions, with 76mm of rainfall hitting White Barrow, Devon between 3pm on Saturday and 11am on Sunday.

Eggardon Hill also saw 51mm in the same period, while 53mm fell in Priddy, Somerset.

While the UK will enjoy a break in the weather throughout the rest of Sunday, Met Office meteorologist Craig Snell warned it will be followed by the “next area of rain”, with heavy rainfall set for parts of northwest England and Wales on Monday morning.

He added the wet weather is set to “weaken” on Sunday as it moves eastwards, so there will be “very little rain” arriving into parts of London and the South East, “and in behind it plenty of sunshine developing probably one of the sunniest days of the week coming up”.

“The odd shower is possible but I think most of us will be dry and then very later on we will start to see some thicker cloud and some outbreaks of rain just arriving into the far west of Northern Ireland and the far west of Scotland,” Mr Snell said.

However, Mr Snell warned conditions across the country “all turn unsettled” as the week goes on with heavy rain “from time to time” and “increasing risk” of strong winds.

The Met Office’s outlook from Tuesday and Thursday says conditions will be “unsettled with outbreaks of rain or showers, and often windy too”.

They add: “Some brighter interludes at times. Mild to start though temperatures becoming closer to average as the week progresses.”

More than 60 flood warnings remain in place for England, according to the Environment Agency, meaning flooding is expected. Meanwhile in Wales more than 10 flood alerts in force, meaning flooding is possible.
