A collagen supplement promoted by Jennifer Aniston has been recalled from shelves in Costco.
The Friends actress is a spokesperson for the supplement brand, which was first launched in 2013.
Vital Proteins, based in Franklin, has now recalled tens of thousands of canisters of its Collagen Peptides powder due to fear that pieces of a broken plastic lid contaminated the product.
According to a voluntary recall notice from Vital Proteins posted on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website, the 24-ounce supplement canisters were distributed to Costco stores in 20 states and Puerto Rico.
‘Potential foreign material contamination’
The following states include Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Wisconsin, Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Florida.
The FDA has said the recall is due to a “potential foreign material contamination (pieces of one blue broken lid may be in one or more canisters)”.
The notice said 59,701 canisters were affected.
In a letter sent to customers back in April, Costco urged people who had bought the supplements not to consume them and to return them for full refunds.
The products were sold at the stores from 17 April to 24 April.
The letter said: “Vital Proteins has initiated a voluntary recall of a single batch code of this product due to a potential foreign material contamination (pieces of one blue broken lid may be in one or more canisters).”
The store said that “no injuries have been reported due to this matter” and said, “the potential risk to the consumer is low.”
Costco said it would take caution and initiate “voluntary recall as consumer safety is our first priority” and that no other Vital Proteins products had been affected by the issue.

In a statement on Wednesday, Vital Proteins said the recall took place out of “an abundance of caution and our commitment to product quality and consumer safety”.
The company also said that it “worked with Costco to both notify their members who may have purchased impacted product and remove any potentially impacted product from stores.”
